How long can a marriage survive after a long-term affair?

I have had many patients over the course of my career who have confessed their spouse’s long term affairs and they absolutely hold on to it which is the reason they want to talk. I don’t believe anyone gets over the betrayal. They may stay together for life but what a miserable one it is. There isn’t any way you could lie to yourself and say it is not a love affair. There just isn’t any amount of FWB or steamy sex in hotels that keeps people together for years. That stuff ends in days, weeks, months. Just like all of your other relationships like that did.
My mother hates my father. They’ve been married 50+ years and she found out about the affair just a few years into the marriage. She gave him another chance and he stayed in the marriage along with staying with TOW. I remember seeing my mother happy exactly once in my entire life and it had nothing to do with her marriage. Absolutely no one outside of the family knows anything about any of it, including the state of the marriage.
